Message from Fr. Tony 08.22.21

Jesus, in this Sunday’s gospel reading, challenges His listeners by telling them that they
must eat His Body and drink His Blood!
To the Jews this was insane! The Law given to Moses makes it clear that they are never to consume the blood of animals, let alone human beings.
Jesus first has to get their attention, then He can explain what He means: He is referring to an intimate union with Him
by receiving His Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist.
This is a “hard saying’ since to refuse to do so means that we are not His disciples, only casual hearers. Many of them
walked away confused and sad, never finding the grace of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
Then He asks His disciples, “Will you also go away?” For once, Peter gets it right when He says, “Lord to whom shall
we go? You have the words of eternal life?”
In times of trouble and anxiety, when we are tempted to “walk away” from the Lord, we need to hear those words in our own hearts: “Will you also go away?” And, like Peter, we need at those times to answer back, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”
May we never stray from Our Loving Lord, especially when we are confused, angry, hurt or worried. Our hope is in the name of the Lord, who made Heaven and earth. Fr. Tony
