Message from Fr. Tony 07.25.21
If you go to the grocery store and walk down the bread aisle (yes, there is a whole section just for bread!) you might be overwhelmed by the varieties of bread available in the store. It’s hard to decide: rye, wheat, French, Italian, raisin, oatmeal, and more.
There is only one Bread of Life, however, Jesus Christ! He is the Bread of Life that has come down from heaven to feed
all those who believe in Him and all those who will come to His table.
When you go to someone’s home, you probably sit in the kitchen, and the host will offer you something to eat. Imagine going to a friend’s house, and smelling fresh baked bread, right out of the oven. Then imagine that there is fresh butter out on the table. Hungry yet?
Then, imagine not being offered any bread to eat! How would you feel? Now, let’s look at it another way: You go to
your friend’s house and they offer you fresh baked bread and butter and you say, “No thanks.” Wouldn’t that be rude?
Every week we gather at the Table of the Lord and we are offered, not ordinary bread, but the Bread of Life, the flesh and blood of Jesus. Hungry yet? We should be! Because we are being offered the opportunity to eat the Bread of Life and drink His Blood and be renewed in heart and spirit.
The Eucharist is the “Source and Summit” of our faith, it is the Bread of Life, here on the Table of the Lord. It is the
reason we come to Mass. We can sing anytime! We can pray anytime, but we can only receive the Bread of Life as Holy
Communion at Mass, or brought to us if we are too sick to come here.
Today, as we gather together at the Table of the Lord, let’s join our hearts as one in the greatest gift that we have, the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and eat the Bread of Life and drink the cup of Salvation in union with Catholics throughout the world.
“Lord I am not worthy to receive You, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” Fr. Tony
